STG at SXSW!

South By Southwest, better known as SXSW, happens every March in Austin and has since 1987 - it's a conference for film, interactive and music professionals, and it's like the whole world converges upon Austin at one time. This year, three STG staffers have taken the difficult journey (you like the sarcasm???) to Texas to meet folks we've only ever emailed or spoken on the phone with, learn more from our peers during panels on all topics related to the music industry and get out and see bands we hope to bring to our venues in Seattle soon!

Behind The Scenes with The Wurlitzer

After working for Seattle Theatre Group for over two years, it's hard to believe I've never seen the instruments and inner workings of The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. So, when Tom Blackwell, from Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society (the non-profit that repairs and maintains the Organ) asked if I'd like to climb into the walls and see, I eagerly replied, "YES!"

Seated anywhere in the auditorium of The Paramount, the sound of The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ holds true to it's name - it sure is MIGHTY! The organ, complete with huge pipes and a band of instruments, including drums, marimbas, bells, whistles, a piano and much more - it's hard to believe all of this was built into the walls of The Paramount Theatre so long ago (1927-28).

A series of small ladders, located in the walls nearest to the stage, leads to floors and floors of instruments (two floors on stage left and three on stage right).

As my behind the scenes look at this historical instrument came to a close I was told that many theatres had Wurlitzer Organs in the 1920's but as the silent era came to a close, and talkies took over, most were sold off. Legend has it that one reason Seattle's Paramount Wurlitzer stayed in place was because of it's size. So it's by luck that Seattle gets to be one of those rare places where audiences can continue to hear The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, as it was intended to be heard, far into the future.

Hear it for yourself! The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ stars in Trader Joe's Silent Movie Mondays "Silents from the South Seas" - every Monday in March @ 7pm at The Paramount Theatre.
