Hubbard Excitement Builds

I’m really excited to see Hubbard Street Dance Chicago for the first time on Friday! Based on their reputation, I’m sure I’ll love it. See a review from the Denver show here. The works described in this review are the same as what we’ll see in Seattle.

Hope to see you there!

Pixies Openers Announced!

Rain Machine

Rain Machine opens for the Pixies on November 12th at STG's Paramount Theatre. Via Anti-records: "Kyp Malone's much anticipated solo project Rain Machine has been released on Anti-records...Rain Machine features ten unflinchingly original and emotional songs mixing elements of modern jazz, blue-grass and blistering guitar driven rock into a refreshing new sound. As singer and guitarist for celebrated band TV on the Radio, Malone proved himself both a captivating and delightfully unpredictable musical force. On Rain Machine, he shows himself a singer and a lyricist of startling talents. Malone recently described Rain Machine as “a nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear, a reflection of a variety of emotions and situations real and imagined - some rhythm some rhyme.” In most instances such a statement could be dismissed as nothing more than playful hyperbole. This is not one of those times. Rain Machine is the sound of an extraordinary artist emerging into his own." Not bad, eh? Listen here, and then see Rain Machine live on November 12th with that little band the Pixies.

No Age

No Age fills the opener slot for the Pixies' November 13th show at STG's Paramount. Via their label, Sub Pop: "Spiritual heirs to both Thurston Moore’s wide-eyed experimentalism and the all-encompassing, stark DIY art-is-life aesthetic of the Crass collective, No Age is the kind of band that inspires its audience without affectation, without cynicism. Its live shows are an exploration of possibilities: a guitar laid over a resonating drum head, effect loops woven together like beautiful harmonies, pop songs as performance art, a duo that sounds like the gale force of rock history delivered through a wind tunnel." Listen to No Age now - and they'll be with the Pixies on November 13th.

Hubbard Dancer Featured in The Olympian

Olympia native Jason Hortin now travels and performs with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago - and he'll return to the Pacific Northwest this Friday as they take to the stage at STG's Paramount Theatre!

The Olympian has a nice piece on Jason, and you can read it online now.

Don't miss him and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago at The Paramount this Friday!

Your Opinion Needed

As we enter into the height of booking for our next season, we find ourselves looking at a lot of videos. Sometimes they catch our eye or interest and this is one I found fun and possibly exciting. Tell us what you think.

All Over The Community Map

STG was all over the community map last weekend to support our mission of providing arts education:

On Saturday, we had a free reading in The Paramount Theatre lobby of 3 scenes from the upcoming Broadway tour of AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY by 4 outstanding actresses (Patti Pimento, Ellen Boyle, Kate Myre & Lisa Norman) from the Cornish theatre faculty. They discussed why this play is so powerful to them & the audiences who experience it—YES we all have families & share the drama that goes with it...

High School students from the Black Achiever’s Program (BAP) at Meredith Matthews YMCA learned how to break down the elements of hip hop music from local musician & teaching artist, Dumi Maraire. There's an artist workshop every Saturday afternoon; performances at The Paramount & Moore Theatres; and an inside look into careers in the performing arts—Let's invest in our future...

The Peter Kirk Community Center in Kirkland was moving with the Dance with Parkinson’s Project, an ongoing program for people with Parkinson’s & their caregivers. This program grew out of STG’s partnership with the Mark Morris Dance Group & is modeled after their Brooklyn program. Other local partners include the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center at Evergreen Hospital and Spectrum Dance Theater—WHETHER sitting or standing, with PD or a caregiver or friend, we can dance to live music together...

20 teens in the Young Choreographer’s Lab worked for 3 hours with professional choreographer mentors in pursuing their artistic dream. Held weekly at Velocity Dance Center, these selected young artists investigate movement invention—WHO knows who may be the next Martha Graham or Mark Morris...

And finally, a Butoh workshop at Velocity Dance Center, with dance artist Haruko Nishimura & composer Joshua Kohl of the Degenerate Art Ensemble, gave local dancers an insight into their contemporary work “Sonic Tales.” This Wednesday, October 21st at 12:30 pm they will share their creative process in a free lecture/demonstration at Cornish PONCHO Hall—TAKE a creative ride w/ Haruko, Joshua & their team of artists at The Moore Theatre, October 30 & 31/Halloween will never be the same....

The Swell Season in NY Times

Damon Winter/The New York Times

Ok - perhaps this will not shock you as much as it has just shocked us - but Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of The Swell Season, who famously started dating during the filming of their gorgeous movie Once, have broken up. As if their music couldn't get any more heart-breaking.

Sob.

BUT - the good news is - they're still together, in the musical sense. They have written a beautiful new album called "Strict Joy", and they are touring in support of it. The New York Times has a great article about them, and you can read it now.

The Swell Season will be at The Paramount on November 22nd
. Join us, won't you?

Maqoma Review: In Maine

Hey folks: check out this amazing review of Gregory Maqoma’s work Beautiful Me at Schaeffer Theater outside of Portland, Maine.

My favorite quote of the review was:

“The latter performance has to be heard to be believed.

But Maqoma later had the entire audience producing Italian-styled rolled "Rs," which in concert sound like a lion's roar. He ended the entire dance sequence with the thought that in spite of hundreds of hours of practicing "R," he was not able to pronounce his own name: Gregory.”

We can’t wait to see it in person at ACT Theatre on November 13 & 14, 2009. More info on Maqoma and the show here.

Nosh Near The Paramount

Seattle Met's got a nice little article offering advice as to where to eat before or after a show at The Paramount - you can read it now!

We've also got a list of places near both The Paramount and The Moore, to help you out if you're stuck thinking of where to go for a bite :)

Reliving Grizzly Bear

While lots of you were at The Paramount watching Sunny Day Real Estate on Friday night, the rest of us were watching Grizzly Bear over at The Moore.

I won't bore you with my review, as it would just be gushing and glowing because it really was a fantastic, amazing, chilling show. I would go watch the exact same show right now and likely enjoy it even more than the first time. In fact, let's all listen to them now.

I like to think their fan Jay-Z refers to them as "Grizzle Bizzle" - imagine how great it would be if he did. I do now.

More photos from the Grizzly Bear show on our STG Flickr - if you were there and took photos, submit them to our Group pool!

THIS JUST IN: review from Andrew Matson of The Seattle Times. Enjoy.

SDRE Through The Lens

A review and some photos from our outstanding Development Department intern, Eric Gonzalez:

given i was eight when they last played in seattle, this was the first time i've gotten to see them perform. i'm a huge fan of jeremy enigk and could not have imagined of a better place for the reunion tour to end but here in their hometown. thumbs up on the crowd's energy, thumbs down on SDRE opting out of having a photo pit.
